What’s in the name World Embrace Tango? A personal message from Jennifer Jaymes:

The essence of Argentine Tango is in the connection: the connection with your partner, the connection with the music, and ultimately, the connection with yourself. My connection to tango as a dancer, artist and community builder deepened greatly during the pandemic, when I began reaching out across the globe for the connection I was missing without access to social dance. I couldn’t have expected to form so many life-altering, transformative bonds through a computer screen. The bonds we can form through our mutual love for tango run so deep - even a global pandemic, thousands of miles, or two completely different languages can’t break us. Since I began reaching out to tango teachers and tango enthusiasts across the globe, the world of tango has opened up for me, and my dance has improved one thousand percent. I began to reach out to the local tango teachers and organizers of every city I would travel. I have made connections in tango communities across the world and the mutual impact has been astounding; the love for tango transcends social media, cultural differences, dance experience and breaks down challenging physical, emotional and social barriers. I even have tango pen-pals I have yet to meet (can’t wait for the chance to travel to their cities!).

The essence of World Embrace Tango is simple: we need all of us to keep Argentine tango alive and well. Each tango dancer, from beginner to maestro, has something to offer this community and we all play a role in progressing tango forward. This is the mindset I encourage when we greet one another on the dance floor. Tango is more than a dance; it becomes a way of life, a call to friendship and a requirement to step out of self.

World Embrace Tango is an invitation for unity among tango dancers worldwide. We start in Olympia by making space for human connections, celebrating collective knowledge, and promoting positive tango experiences.

I am teaching classes and organizing tango events in the South Sound of Washington State that create opportunities for quality tango learning and collaboration with all others who want to grow tango. World Embrace Tango serves as a platform to encourage combined resources, shared ideas and champion other tango communities.

Let’s delight in each another’s unique gifts and understand that we are better together. Each of our individual strengths, when shared, make a stronger global tango community. We are ALL necessary for tango to continue to thrive. There is absolutely no way to have the full experience of tango by yourself. That is why we embrace.

About Jennifer Jaymes

Jennifer Jaymes has been dancing since the age of three, with a background in ballet, jazz, tap, contemporary and ballroom dance. She fell madly in love with Argentine Tango in 2014 after deciding to take a deep dive into both the technical and social elements of the dance. She has been dedicated to Argentine Tango ever since, studying and enjoying it as her primary dance.

Jennifer began assistant teaching at Backstreet Tango in 2016, where she studied tango for five years under the apprenticeship of Luis Perez (Tacoma, WA). Since that time, she has intimately studied the nuances of tango technique with influential teachers such as Veronica Gardella and Marcelo Bernadaz (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Ana Thomas (Las Vegas, NV, US), Leah Barsky (NY, NY, US), Buket Akdol (Istanbul, Turkey), Maria Zujeva (Tallinn, Estonia), Dilara Citil (Istanbul, Turkey), Paula Emerick (Brazil), Sol Irupe (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Maja Petrovic and Marko Miljevic (Zagreb, Croatia), Zeynep Aktar and Sercan Yigit (Turkey), Joe Ferreira (Brazilian native and Florida based), Jorge Olguin (Argentinian native, located in Vancouver, Canada), Jeanette Erazu and Leandro Caparelli (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Lali D’onofrio (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and many more. She continues to train regularly with Brazilian maestros Olivia Teixeira and Fernando Lima, as well as Lucas Fernandes De Goes Vieira and Argentinian stationed Alejandro Beron and Kelly Lettieri.

Jennifer lives in Olympia, Washington with her husband, Lyndon, and her three dogs, Bodhi, Cody and Kai. She has a Masters in Clinical Social Work, and enjoys hiking, gardening, design and wine tasting in her free time.

Dance

Approach

Jennifer approaches Argentine Tango with a spirit of inclusivity and collaboration. She believes that all dance is an opportunity for growth, healing and fun. Jennifer also studies Pilates, yoga and Gyrokinesis to promote a healthy view of body, mind and soul, and incorporates these elements into her dance life and teaching. She believes that positive tango experiences promote connection, technique, and artistry with every dancer. Each of these elements are included at every level of learning. Her belief is that tango, like any other form of movement, should be directly tied to wellbeing and foster healthy hearts, minds, and communities. Learning tango is a journey, not a destination, and can be enjoyed at any level, age and ability.

Jennifer teaches social Argentine Tango, with an emphasis on musicality and improvisation. Her teaching is rooted in the EsTudo Tango teaching methods of Olivia Teixiera and Fernando Lima. However, what makes Jennifer unique is her vast experience studying the dance with countless teachers from many different tango communities around the world. She sees her eclectic background of study as an asset, noting that the best dancers around the world are not simply students of one maestro, but those who study with many and take the best of all for themselves. Jennifer’s understanding of the varying styles of tango, along with the understanding of how they are represented across the globe, help create a tango program that is inclusive of all styles and embraces. One is not better than the other. Adaptability is key and knowledge is power. It is one thing to be a stunning performer or to dance great with a practice partner. The mark of a truly fantastic social dancer is one that can dance with anybody on the social floor- not only advanced dancers with other advanced dancers. More than dance steps are required to become a keen and connected social dancer. Jennifer is determined to give you tools so that you can dance with anybody, of any style, at any level. Musicality will be your lighthouse, and connection will be the light. Jennifer’s use of embodiment practices in tango, heavily influenced by teacher Guille Barrionuevo, are another unique offering, focusing on connection, presence and understanding of the mind-body connection in dance.
